Welcome to Fantasy Shields, a site devoted to fantasy heraldy and the creation of heraldic shields and coat of arms. This site features a heraldic shield generator made in Flash which allows you to compose a coat of arms of your own by simple drag and drop and latter export and addition to "The Lists".

The "Heraldic Shield Generator" can be found under The Herald

Updates

  • 2012-01-25:Hello folks. Site was moved to a new server hopefully with enough disk space. Since I have freer rein on what to install here I'm currently working on Fantasy Shields 2.0 which will be based on SVG and JS rather than Flash. Hopefully this will allow a greater flexibility and array of features.

  • 2011-11-18:Short update. Sorry for the lack of updates! I'm currently preparing a different server because of storage constraints but thanks to my dayjob (which allows me to buy food) I do not really find the time. I hope I find the nerve in a short while because you are generating so many. Stay tuned for updates since I'm pondering some major changes after the move!

  • 2011-08-21: Upon multiple request I added a few more diagonal backgrounds, including a chevron, quartered background etc.

  • 2011-06-02: I added a far more detailed eagle based on the Austrian and old Prussian eagle. Quite happy about this one. I also added a wolf design upon multiple requests.

  • 2011-04-26: To give you some more toys to play around I added a row of symbols: Lozenge, disc, crescent and decrescent. I'll see to add a few more beasts soon!

  • 2011-04-25: Oh dear. Found some really stupid, buggy code that must have been an eyesore to all you IE users (why aren't you saying anything!?!). Fixed it up and will now see if I can appease demands for more elements to play around with

  • 2011-03-05: Fixed some stuff and made the checker field align with the quarter field. Still working on some other issues I hope to bring you soon!

  • 2011-02-17: Currently working on a rank system for the shields. Current CSS mixup is caused by this

  • 2010-12-01: added shield rotator with random refresh function so you get a glimpse what other people have done with the editor.

  • 2010-11-11: Tweaked the look of the site to give it a better finish.

  • 2010-09-11: Fixed problem with comment function

  • 2010-08-31: Finally reworked some of the CMS. Site should now function better.

  • 2010-04-14: CMS system deployed

  • 2010-02-18: Bug fixes and tweaks. Better Colorpicker deployed

  • 2010-01-23: Site launched

Feature schedule

There is still much to be done here, particularly content and various nifty things. I hope I get some of it done in some time. Until then stay tuned. As of now there's a comment function, I'll however have to port all the PHP stuff to a better code foundation. Hope it won't take as long as it did for this (mainly laziness though).

list:

- Rate the created shields presented in the Lists
- Several missing heraldic beasts
- Highlight function so one can find the element on the shield
- Center element on shield
- Duplicate layer button for simple element duplication
- stringify shield pattern so you can reload a shield at a latter time and reedit it
- I also ponder a viable html5 version

Suggestions, ideas, comments? Please give feedback here!

This is a project still in development. If you have ideas concerning additional content, better usability or plainly want to give some general feedback, please post here. I appreciate it any feedback which might help me to improve this little gadget.

Thanks in advance!

Świetna rzecz tylko jak mówi przedmówca przydałoby się więcej obrazków bestii i symboli.

Fantastic tool!!! It would be great to have more beasts and images, like a stag, bear, wolf etc
by King E Newton
If you gave the ability to shrink the size of the objects on the shield. also if you allowed cross face backgrounds where some are opaque and blend in with other backgrounds.
by splapshotkill87
hope you guys like my sheild's thanks if you do
by tadhg
I wouldn't mind the ability to crop some of the images
by House Koltev
Just sweet, I have no clue who that famillia douche was, but the site works great

@familia est vita: if you had been polite and more precise what problems you encountered I might feel compelled to help you. Since you are not and not we have to assume you are trolling.
by familia est vita
For one this site didnt work to its shit threr most comments are of one person bulllshit
by CRyanson
This site has made my life as a DM so much easier! i think it would be cool if you added other shield types than just the basic kite shield to work on though.
by Moonlight
Great site! Cool things! Keep the good work! I found site where hand made coat of arms are made out of silver, brass and copper. http://www.global-heraldic.com
by Tacuma Cumo
Add a "donate" button. That should help speed things along. Once again, YIPPEEE lol I love this site
by @Tacuma Cumo
Your suggestions are kind of on my todo list for v2. Just slow going on some details.
by Siddo
Amazing!!!
by Tacuma Cumo again...
man, I wish I could go back to my shield, register on ur site and edit it as I c fit. I'd love to link it to my facebook page too. Yeah and authentic scratches and victim's bitemarks on the edge of it was not my cup of tea. Not even a ribbon to type motto? That has got to be in there too lol I am so bookmarking this site!
by Tacuma Cumo
WHOOOHOOOOOO lol This is the best! Only I wish it was much more than just a shield, but a coat of arms. At least now I have something to start with and I am so grateful.
by Raghart
Best shield maker i've seen so far. Smooth and easy to use. ¡More beasts and symbols, please! And keep on the good work
by Ryan
More beasts and symbols, excellent work!
by jacob
Need to be able to choose wat size u want things to be
by Katt/Talia
This is perfect when I want to create a crest for characters in my stories! Thanks!
by Peter
I would suggest that you add dragons and possibly double headed eagles
by Peter
Wow, I really love this.
by Steven
:Pretty Cool! :3
by Alex
This is really cool. However, I think it would make things a bit easier if you had a "center" button that immediately centers the beast or symbol you add.
by Arthur
Thanks, these will fit great on my http://fantasyboeken.com profile! :-)

Thanks! Very cool website and shield generator. You might want to add more animals and more symbols to create a larger variety. Also, when viewing the shield in a new tab, you can see that the border gets cut and becomes pretty messy. Anyways, best of luck and thanks again.

Your site is about to reach front page of Wykop.pl (site like Reddit), prepare your servers :)

hi there! this is an awesome site :) thanks for getting this up and working, its is by far the best looking shield/ crest generator by far. like the others have said about adding a few more standard beasts etc will it be ok if you can also add decorative letters? some families would like to have the initial to their family name inscribed onto the shield, even more so than any symbol. thats all and thanks for coming up with this site, its a blessing!
by Lucas Barrows
Hi All, I've discovered a way to increase the colour spectrum of this site firstly go to Wikipedia and in the search section you write Color list or Colour list and you will get from Air Force Blue - Zinnwaldite Brown 833 colours to choose from. Enjoy
by ealasaid
little is to be recovered in the history of diversity
by Holger
Hello Stan. that option would create problems of it's own. The current system is set up in a very particular way. I'm currently working on a different approach using different technology. Then it wouldn't be as much of a problem and as the base technology would be SVG I could imagine an upload queue for that. Still working on the base functionality though. But stay tuned! S
by Stan
I notice a lot of people are asking for more symbols - what if you instead had an option to upload an image from your desktop or a URL? That would make it easier to create a wider variety without needing to create so many more symbols.
by heli
Jonathan Jozacky's thing is awesome. Youve got to see it!
by Morgawrx
This is such an AWESOME shield generator. By far the best i have ever used Keep up the good work, Morgawrx

Absolutely fantastic. It is indescribable. Okay, it is describable, and if it were to be described I would say... hmm... ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! Why are all these people saying there should be more symbols??? C'mon! Cut them some slack, fellas! Like I said, this is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thumbs up. (All the way up to the Andromeda galaxy, of course!) Thanks. :^) :^) One more. :^) Okay, two more. :^) :^) :^) Oops.
by theblacksmith
Its great and got me out of a jam, but you should get more symbols. Thnx
by Mestre de Campo
Muito bom esse site! Eu sou aqui do Brasil, e gostei muito daqui! Já fiz vários escudos de armas, e é muito bom!
by The Shield Maker
This is absolutely fantastic! However, I too have noticed a lack of symbols.
by Tham Berek
Absolutely excellent - my hat is off to you. The only complaint I have, as I'm sure you've seen from the other comments, is the lack of beats, symbols, etc. (was looking for a clamshell and some keys) However, it's a small complaint. Actually, a suggestion I have is that perhaps you could make it so that you have the option to have the image display like a coat of arms rather than on the shield, with mantilng around the edges? (That intricate scrollwork you see on tapestries that have coats of arms on them and what have you) Just a thought - not sure if it would be possible or not. Otherwise, this is truly the best generator I've found, even with the low range of symbols. I'd rather tweak my ideas for a coat of arms and make it work here than find another, lesser quality generator that has the all the symbols I envisioned! Please do update, and keep this up! :)
by Sir O'Neill
Very, Very good. You might want to add the "Lozengy" field, it's like symetrical rows of rhombi. It's the best heraldry editor I've seen!
by Antz
absolutely fantastic, some fields, beasts and symbols missing... take a look at some crests on my website http://www.antznest.co.uk/kingmaker/navtitl.htm plus an option to duplicate some of the symbols
by Vor
oh and this is AWESOME

Need a Stag icon :)

I forgot to say that this is really great! This is off-topic, but last year I was told about a website that helps people memorize the Bible. You can sign up at: http://www.memverse.com/?referrer=CJW Thanks!
by InSoloChristo
Could you add a gyronny pattern and sheaves of wheat?
by Kenny
Yes allow user to upload symbols. You can also add the following suggestions. Sword (blade downwards) Sword (blade upwards) Skull Basilisk Axe Grain sheaf Scythe Helmet Thanks for a splendid site.
by Cryogenes
Feature Idea: Allow user to upload a symbol
by Loran
Excellent work!!!! This looks great. I would also like some more shield shapes and even a few banner options as well. Not sure about "satanic" images but some Pegan and Christian symbols would be great. Nature symbols would be good too. Trees and the likke. Great so far.
by Nilles
Nice. nice....pretty good to let your imagination fly...would be cool if we could choose different shield shapes. And please more satanic symbols please :D and some weapons.
by TechnoScrabble
Freaking AWESOMESAUCE. I've been using this to make house shields for a D&D game, and so far, this is the best shield maker I've found, though it could definitely use more options, and perhaps some explanations of the meanings of the different heraldric symbols? Yeah, I'm a heraldry geek.
by Bexxx
what about adding what the symbols and other things mean
by Holger
I'm sorry to hear that. Was it solely the handling of the creator or that it isn't strict about heraldic rules?
by Tonie
This wasn't as helpful to me as other sites were. Mabey you could add some more instructions?
by Holger
Thanks for the praise and I understand the complaint. Obvious problem is that the animals etc. take the longest time to prepare for the editor. I might look into it more. THX!
by Alpha
I think you did extremely well with the fields but you need more beasts like boars or stags, etc.
by Christo
More options, :) Seriously it's great! The only improvement would be to have more fields, ordinaries, partions, animals, objects and plants to use. Maybe also have the animals doing different things (rampant, regardant, etc).
by Deer
Very nice indeed. Perfect for RPG and such :D I would simply wish for more symbols, as well as a few more backgrounds. Some Crosses, Water, Fishes and so on. Also it seems like it is not possible to browse to the sides in the menu?
by John
would be nice with a medieval sword symbol. With the blade pointing downwards and fliping it making the blade pointing upwards
by bob
make an option that allows you to draw out a design and when you generate the coat of arms please make the picture bigger
by Tyler
Can we help to bring in new symbols? what do you create them on? maybe you could add other shield shapes?
by dkgh2012
I had fun making my shield, It was a class assignment and making it wasn't boring at all. That's all I have got to say.
by Eric
I like this program, but need more variety in field divisions, symbols, etc. There are many heraldry sites on internet that have traditional shield designs and traditional symbols. Also, it would be nice to have a feature that lets the user copy the symbols, rather than start from scratch each time. This way, user could enlarge/shrink a given symbol, color it, then make mulitple copies for quick and unique placement on the shield.
by Mike
So how the hell do I make a cross? Can somebody tell please. Thanks yall. Peace
by Devedor
I agree with the previous posters that said more symbols are needed. I think weapons, as well as skulls would be entertaining.
by Deicide
A few ideas for symbols to add could be weapons, like sword, axe, two swords crossed, two axes crossed, spear, dagger, hammer. A few models for crosses would be cool as well. As for beasts, a few different dragon models would be awesome!
by Rc
How can i Generate the Cross?
by cadet 2nd LT .A rayon
thanks! this helped me alot
by mimi
ha, i really do enjoy this
by tazz
this is good
by mimi
i love this
by Valtharius
Skulls and perhaps other evil icons. Have to represent the dark side. =o)
by Lucas Barrows
Please put in weapons like (Swords), (Battle Axes), (Hammers of War) and alike.
by Corron Greymont
Perhaps you could include a crane, or maybe a martlett? Also, could you make a saltire background? Otherwise, I love it. Pure genius
by Oraivec
Very nicely done. Thanks for sharing this. I would suggest adding the ability to surround the shield with crowns, banners, etc so that a complete coat of arms could be created.
by Jr
MORE ANIMALS!! please
by Alanna
Is there a chance that a fret background could be added? Thanks muchly, and it is a lovely generator.
by emerson
I think that there should be a sowrd, wolf and cross also add cheveron and animal heads?
by Poe
For the creatures might I suggest a swan be added.
by kasper
what about having the possibility of a fretty background?
by Tano
almost had what I had in mind its just missing a cross.
by Holger
Found what appears to be a fragment of yours here http://fantasyshields.com/lists.php?show=3963 . When you hit generate the generator transfers a bytestream back to the server which converts it into a PNG, if this gets interrupted, then the image can't show. Do you use a slow connection or a browser like Opera/Safari/... because I mostly test on Firefox and IE and hope for the gods of compatibility to do the rest?
by don
mine isn't generating...
by JBOLTON
Very good generator. However, you're missing the Chevron!! NO CHEVRON!!??
by Benn
Amazing generator! Great job! A couple of suggestions: fox, raven, cross, and cross saltire
by Me
Flame would be great and such a good creator. Thanks
by Lucas Barrows
More Items please like. - V shapaed field with an rotate every 90 degres. - Multi fields EG; http://sydney.edu.au/medicine/surgery/about/people/index.php. Westmead Hospital. - Different fonts like (Old English and a like.) - Animals EG; Boars, Rams, Swans, some more Lions and some more Mythical animals. - Circle shields. - and A fan site on facebook
by Nick
I love it! It would be really nice to make the objects different sizes, though.
by mike
awesome site, I could spend hours designing shields. different shield shape would be great. thanks.
by Cebu
If you could add a two-color, diagonally split field, that would be nice. Seen here on the Meisser coat of arms: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~keller/meisser/photo/Meisb.jpg Love the site! Best one I've found!
by Jaime
this is pretty awesome. the best herald generator i have seen. thank you for allowing peoole to use it. its really something cool!
by J.
Fantastic site, thank you for opening this up to all. Excellent uses and hoping you continue to grow and add varied items. Thank you.
by Fulvio
Un sito veramente ben ideato e che permette di creare con facilità degli scudi meravigliosi.Con qualche altro simbolo e sfondo in più sarebbe proprio perfetto. Complimenti!
by Ferinan
uhm..can you add..shield shape, crest, top banner, top mantle, shield supporter, bottom mantle and bottom banner..if that is possible. Thanks great work
by Perrin
they need some wolfs in the beast part... that would be pretty awesome
by Cymro
Aye add some helmets and weapons
by Jeez
Maybe add some basic shapes as well, nice tool tough
by anonymous
Great job. Instead of a slider, maybe you could use buttons on the side, so that it is easier to navigate. Also, give us the ability to choose a crest shape as well. Also the typical "more beasts/symbols!!" Again, great job.
by Lucas Barrows
I'm planning to use the shields I've created on a music video.

Moer I use it the more I love it God bless you.

I love this site

You have done a magnificent job here and i wish to thank you for offering this to all on the web. i with the help of others are making a fantasy based forum and being able to generate coats of arms has been a great help to us we of course will give credit and links to this site once the forum is up and running Nightfall makes a point though that perhaps there could be a few more beasts or some more symbols or perhaps weapons but on the whole you have done an excellent job Well Done!
by Morgan
You need more symbols and animals. Like a moon, cats, bears, ect. Besides that it was pretty awsome!
by Nightfall
this is a great generator, although it is lacking a few beasts and fields (unless there is a way to access more fields than are immediately visible), also it is missing some other symbols, some coats of arms had plants, buildings, or weapons on them, as for symbols well, the ones there are probably the most practical, but for a fantasy type coat of arms, this generator could stand to use a few more. I came to this site to generate a coat of arms for an npc in Dungeons and Dragons, and I could not find a dragon agressive only a passant one, also I was hoping to see some deity holy symbols from D&D. also if you do a web search for coats of arms through history or some such you may find some good images. I suppose that I could have drawn a coat of arms or designed one using online images, but I would prefer to just go to a site and be able to just generate one using resources that already exist(it would save time and effort). overall this is a great generator and I hope you keep up the good work.
by Lisa
This is really awesome! You've done a great job. I was wondering if there might be a secret to creating diamond symbols? My crest needs 5 diamonds across the middle and I was playing with the steep waves to see if I could do it using layers, but I'm not that talented.
by Pasquale
Very good job. Keep going on. I use this to creat my own blason for the role game "Regni Rinascimentali". Regards!
by Boniface
Three cheers for thou! Thanks for the effort and time.
by Malizlato
Well, well done. This site is great. As for ideas...well...if it can have some more shield divisions, creatures, symbols it would be even better...not much just some more for bigger pool to choose
by M. Acuña
Great idea! Hope you get everything the way you want it. Looking forward to your improvements.
by Q
Well done! I think this is great! With a few more symbols & beasts it would be even better.. Ideally, it would be possible to upload .gif's or .png's of personal sympols that could then be integrated into the shield... Thanks anyway... Q
by Fred1887
Hey, sorry to bother you, but you should check your IE compatibility! There seems to be some stuff messed up. Good luck and great work so far!
